Mobal do not provide technical support for data services but you are welcome to set them up yourself. We would be interested to hear about your experiences of using them.
GPRS Data Access
Standard GSM networks are excellent for making and receiving voice calls, but when it comes to sending and receiving emails or browsing the web on a cell phone, they are limited.
This is where a technology called ‘GPRS’ comes in, as it enhances GSM phones to enable them to transfer data more rapidly.
Your Mobal World SIM Card can also be inserted into a Laptop Data Card, to give you a connection to the internet from anywhere with GSM network coverage.
With GPRS, there is no waiting time to establish a connection, which results in the link being ‘always on’, (unlike with normal GSM data transfer).
With a standard GSM data connection, you are charged all the time that the connection is active, whereas with GPRS, you only pay for the data that you access. In addition to this, you can make a voice call at the same time that you are transferring data.
The data transfer rate with GPRS is typically between 32 – 48 kbps (kilobits per second), which is comparable with a common ‘dial-up’ internet connection (56 kbps).
This is adequate for checking email and browsing the web.
