Take a peek inside the Forbidden City
February 11th, 2008When visiting China, a visit to Beijing would not be complete without a tour of the Forbidden City.
Located a little north of Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City is a compelling and fascinating location, developed using the skills of over 200,000 laborers.
Starting with Yongle in 1420, the Forbidden City has been the home of a number of emperors, making it a holiday tour worthy of a call home.
Construction of the Forbidden City began in 1406.
"You can enter the Forbidden City at either the southern or northern gate, but we prefer the southern as you then approach the buildings from the front," said the Economist.
"Allow at least two hours for a quick tour, or half a day or longer if you really want to explore this sprawling complex."
Located close to either the Tiananmen West or Tiananmen East metro stations, during the summer months, the Forbidden City is open every day between 08:00 and 17:00 local time.
